The Vikings came from the rugged, inhospitable north

known today as Scandinavia.

As the Roman Empire flourished further south,

Scandinavians had small settlements,

no central government, and no coinage.

Yet by the 11th century,

the Vikings had spread far from Scandinavia,

gaining control of trade routes throughout Europe,

conquering kingdoms as far as Africa,

and even building outposts in North America.

The secret to their success was their ships.

바이킹들은 척박하고

살기 어려운 북쪽 땅에서 왔는데

오늘날 스칸디나비아라고 불리는 곳이죠.

멀리 남쪽에서 로마제국이 번성할 때,

스칸디나비아 인들의 정착지는 작았고

중앙정부나 화폐도 없었습니다.

하지만 11세기에 이르러서는

바이킹들은 스칸디나비아로부터

멀리까지 퍼져나갔고

유럽 전역의 무역로를 장악했으며

멀리 아프리카에 있는 왕국들까지 정복했습니다.

그리고 심지어 북아메리카에 전초기지까지 건설합니다.
