And here's where future history comes in handy,

because cities don't just spring up overnight like weeds.

They arise and transform.

They bear the scars and ornaments of

wars, migrations, economic booms, cultural awakenings.

A future city should have monuments, yeah,

but it should also have layers of

past architecture, repurposed buildings

and all of the signs of how we got to this place.

And then there's second-order effects,

like how do things go wrong -- or right

-- in a way that nobody ever anticipated?

 

Like, if the walls of your apartment are made out of

a kind of fungus that can regrow itself to repair any damage,

what if people start eating the walls?

여기서 미래사가 쓸모 있어지는데요,

도시라는 건 간밤의 잡초처럼 쑥쑥 자라나는 게 아니니까요.

발달되고 변화하죠.

전쟁, 이민, 경제 성장, 문화적 각성으로 인한

흉터와 장식을 간직하죠.

미래의 도시는 물론 기념비가 있어야겠지만

과거의 건축물과 재건축된 건물들,

그리고 우리가 여기까지 오기까지의 흔적이 남아있어야 해요.

그리고 2차 영향도 생각해야겠죠.

일들이 어떻게 잘못되고 잘 되는지,

아무도 상상하지 못한 방식으로요.

예를 들어

아파트 벽이 스스로 자라나고

스스로 수리할 수 있는

버섯 같은 균으로 만들어져 있어서

사람들이 벽을 먹기 시작한다면요?
