Now, future history is basically just

what it sounds like.

It is a chronology of things

that haven't happened yet,

like Robert A.

 

Heinlein's famous story cycle,

which came with a detailed chart of upcoming events

going up into the year 2100.

 

Or, for my most recent novel,

I came up with a really complicated time line

that goes all the way to the 33rd century

and ends with people living on another planet.

Meanwhile,

a second-order effect is basically the kind of thing

that happens after the consequences of a new technology

or a huge change.

 

There's a saying often attributed to

writer and editor Frederik Pohl that

"A good science fiction story should predict

not just the invention of the automobile,

but also the traffic jam."

로버트 A. 하인라인의 유명한 이야기 주기처럼요.

2100년까지 거슬러 내려가는 미래의 일들을

세세히 기록한 이야기요.

아니면,

저의 가장 최근 소설에서는

아주 복잡한 연대표를 만들어냈는데

33세기까지 앞서 가서 사람들이

다른 행성에 사는 걸로 끝나는 이야기입니다.

새로운 기술이나 격변으로 인해

일어나는 일들을 말하는 거예요.

작가이자 편집자인 프레드릭 폴이 한 말이 있는데,

"좋은 공상 과학 소설은 자동차의 발명뿐만 아니라

교통 체증까지도 예견할 수 있어야 한다"라는 말입니다.
