Our world is changing so fast,

and there's a kind of accelerating feedback loop

where technological change and social change feed on each other.

 

When I was a kid in the 1980s,

we knew what the future was going to look like.

It was going to be some version of "Judge Dredd" or "Blade Runner."

It was going to be neon megacities and flying vehicles.

 

But now, nobody knows what the world is going to look like even in just a couple years,

and there are so many scary apparitions lurking on the horizon.

From climate catastrophe to authoritarianism,

everybody is obsessed with apocalypses,

 even though the world ends all the time, and we keep going.

우리가 살고 있는 세계는

급변하고 있고 이 세계에는 기술 변화와 사회 변화가

서로를 먹여 살리는 일종의 가속 피드백 루프가 있습니다.

1980년,

제가 어렸을 때에는 미래가 어떤 모습일지 알았죠.

"저지 드레드"나 "블레이드 러너"같은 모습일 거라고 생각했어요.

반짝이는 큰 도시들과 날아다니는 자동차들이요.

 

하지만 지금은 단 1,2년 후의 세상의 모습도 아무도 몰라요.

그리고 수평선 너머로 무서운 유령들이 넘실거리죠.

기후 재해부터 시작해서 권위주의,

모두가 세상의 종말에 집착하고

세상이 멸망하는 것 같아도 우린 계속 나아가죠.
