So as a science fiction writer whose stories often take place years

or even centuries from now,

I've found that people are really hungry for visions of the future

that are both colorful and lived in,

but I found that research on its own is not enough to get me there.

 

Instead,

I use a mixture of active dreaming

and awareness of cutting-edge trends in science and technology

and also insight into human history.

 

I think a lot about what I know of human nature and

the way that people have responded in the past to huge changes and upheavals and transformations.

 

And I pair that with an attention to detail,

because the details are where we live.

 

We tell the story of our world through the tools we create

and the spaces that we live in.

 

And at this point,

it's helpful to know a couple of terms

that science fiction writers use all of the time:

"future history" and "second-order effects."

그래서 지금으로부터 몇 년 후 또는

몇 세기 후의 이야기를 쓰는 공상 과학 소설가로서

사람들은 형형색색이면서도

빛바랜 미래의 이야기에 목말라한다는 걸 알아냈어요.

 

하지만 연구하는 것만으로는 도달할 수 없음을 깨달았습니다.

그래서 대신 적극적인 몽상과

최첨단 과학과 기술에 대한 인식,

그리고 인류의 역사에 대한 통찰력을 섞어서 사용합니다.

 

인간의 본성에 대해

제가 알고 있는 것,

그리고 과거의 큰 변화,

격동과 변혁에 대한 사람들의 대응을 자주 생각하곤 합니다.

 

그리고 그걸 세세한 것에 주의를 기울여 연결시키는데

그 세부적인 것들은 곧 우리가 사는 곳이니까요.

우리는 우리가 만들어낸 도구와

우리가 살고 있는 공간을 통해

우리 세계의 이야기를 써 내려갑니다.

 

이쯤 되면 공상 과학 소설가들이

늘 사용하는 용어 몇 가지를 알아두는 게 좋겠네요.

 

"미래사"와 "2차 효과"요.
