A couple of years ago,

I traveled to northern India

to a place overlooking the plains of Bangladesh

where the Khasi people live in a forest

that receives more rainfall than anywhere else on earth.

And during the monsoon season,

travel between villages is cut off by these floods,

which transform this entire landscape from a forested canopy into isolated islands.

 

This hill tribe has evolved living root bridges

that are created by guiding and growing tree roots

that you can barely wrap your arms around through a carefully woven scaffolding.

Multiple generations of the Khasi men and the women and the children,

they'll take care of these roots as they grow to the other side of that bank,

where they're then planted to make a structure

that will get stronger with age.

This 1,500-year-old tradition of growing living root bridges has produced

75 of these incredible structures.

And while they take 50 years to grow,

in this landscape they actually last for centuries.

몇 년 전,

저는 인도 북부지역,

방글라데시의 평원이 보이는 곳으로 여행을 갔었습니다.

그곳에서는 카시족들이 지구 상

어떤 곳보다도 더 많은 강우가 오는 숲에서 살고 있습니다.

우기 동안에 마을을 넘나드는 여행은

홍수로 가로막혔습니다.

그 홍수는 이 전체 풍경을 숲이

하늘을 덮은 모습에서 고립된 섬의 모습으로 바꿨습니다.

이 고산족은 살아 있는 나무뿌리 다리를 만들어 왔는데

나무 뿌리 방향을 잡아주고

성장시켜서 만들죠.

 

뿌리는 팔로 겨우 감쌀 수 있을 정도인데

아주 정교하게 엮은 발판으로 만듭니다.

몇 세대에 걸친 카시족들의 남성들,

여성들 그리고 아이들,

그들은 그들이 뿌리의 구조를 만들기 위해

심어 놓은 그 중심축의 반대편으로 뿌리가 성장할 때

이 뿌리들을 관리할 것입니다.

그리하여 뿌리는 세월이 지남에 따라 더 강해집니다.

1500년이나 된 오래된 전통인 살아 있는 뿌리 다리 키우기는

75개의 이 엄청난 구조물들을 만들어 냈습니다.

그리고 뿌리가 성장하기까지 50년이 걸리는 동안,

이 풍경에서 뿌리들은 사실상 몇 세기 동안 지속됩니다.
